The Sniper Rifle is a marksman weapon that has formed a staple long-range option in the game since its release. For many it is their primary long-range weapon. The overall popularity of the Sniper Rifle fell after the Auto Sniper was introduced in v477, providing the same range but more flexibility for guessing shots at the cost of less damage.

The model is a Synty asset designed after the appearance of a real Type 96 or L96 sniper rifle. Outside of the barrel, magazine, scope, and butt of the gun, the body of the Sniper Rifle is a desaturated green.

It comes pre-equipped with an 8x magnification scope (Sniper Scope) in Standard modes. In Survival modes it uses Rifle Ammo. Each Sniper Rifle comes with 5 rounds loaded.

Performance[]

Overview[]

The Sniper Rifle is a powerful weapon that takes some skill to use. Due to the lower physics velocity of the sniper's bullets, all shots have a downward curve/drop. Players must learn the distances within War Brokers to effectively lead shots on moving targets at a long distance if they wish to properly utilize the power of this weapon. Without understanding range very well, players are able to use the inbuilt measuring lines on the scope to estimate distances to other players and adjust aim as needed. Use of flare beacons also grant players a quick and easy measurement. The potential of this weapon falls the more time that is needed to identify the range of a player. In the time a player is measuring distance, an enemy may kill the distracted player. Players may find better luck with weapons of a higher velocity to avoid bullet drop. Among marksman weapons the Hunting Rifle is an acceptable alternative, granting long range but not as much punch.

Sniping has the benefit of working closer up too where adjusting aim is irrelevant. Some players find success in holding a line of fire in corridors on CQC maps like Office and Space Station. Camping key areas allows a player to control the flow of players from a difficult to reach area. Paired with good teamwork, a sniper can completely lock off an area of the map. Without active support, a sniper in such a position is very vulnerable to a flank and may introduce a window for players to push too close to their spawn. This could lead to being trapped in the ally spawn. For what sniping can provide, most players instead are better focusing on grouping up and controlling central areas with weapons more suited to crowds and close ranges like sub-machine guns and shotguns.

The weapon performs very poor when vehicles are introduced into the equation. Depending on the player, this may mean pairing the Sniper Rifle with the RPG, at least for vehicle maps, or with the AK Rifle or AR Rifle. The combination of AK Rifle and Sniper Rifle is considered one of the best anti-personnel combinations in the game due to its high flexibility for all ranges.

How to use[]

Projectiles have a programmed limit of 1219.2m (4000 ft) for horizontal range. No weapon that makes use of firing a projectile towards others may surpass this hard limit. While in regular play this would not pose a problem, very large maps (i.e. the Battle Royale map) may have players shooting at distant targets to no avail. Within the projectile's horizontal limit, players must adjust their aim higher to adjust for the bullet drop and for elevation. If a player were just within the limit at a horizontal distance of 1200m, they may actually be 1230m away because of elevation (the hypotenuse). This is important to note for maps where high elevation is common for sniping, such as skyscrapers and smoke stacks on Flooded.

The scope may be used to measure the distance from an enemy by placing the crosshair at the opponent's feet. The numbered lines on the top half of the scope will then line up with the eyes of the enemy to give an estimation of the distance they are from the player. These lines are in gaps of 200m. The bottom half of the scope is then used to line up a numbered line with the eyes of the enemy. This may slightly differ based on elevation. Because there is travel time, aiming ahead of a player that is moving may be required to land a shot. Hitting moving targets at range is not an easy feat and may take time to learn.

The suggested path to growing familiar with the Sniper Rifle is to start with learning ranges. Getting used to measuring the distance from players eventually leads to a rough understanding of range just from sight alone. At this stage players will be able to aim without using the top half of the scope. From here players are encouraged to learn to snipe moving targets, learn to snipe while moving (which increases scope sway), and finally move onto sniping while mid-air. Airborne sniping first is done off of jumps, normally from behind cover, but may progress to a level of competency where falling from some height (such as a shelf on Kitchen) can be managed.

The majority of sniping does not exceed 600m in distance. Sniping from spawn to spawn across Area 15 Base is among the longer ranges the majority of players will use the weapon within. Going too far out increases difficulty to land hits more and more, and is often not very rewarding. At these ranges, cover is also scarce, meaning that any enemy that can hit that far will have an easier shot.

Trivia[]

  • In Classic the Sniper Rifle has the longest zoom of any weapon due to its equipped Sniper Scope (8x) alongside the Auto Sniper
  • In Battle Royale if the player does not equip the Sniper Rifle with a scope the player's hand will not operate the bolt
  • The Sniper Rifle's sound effects are shared with the .50 Cal Sniper.
  • There is a bug that occasionally removes the scope on the Sniper Rifle when transferring from a survival mode to a standard mode
