Gold Mine is a small Classic map that released in v502 (June 21, 2024). It features an open vertical shaft with Old Western–themed lodging throughout the mine. Rock piles provide some cover for snipers along the upper ring and a few tunnels wrap through the rocky foundations. According to developer JoJa15, there are 7+ Easter eggs in total across the map.
Development on the map first began in 2021 and was mentioned in a few dev logs up until December 2, 2021. Development froze until 2024.
It would be removed from the map pool in v511 (December 19, 2024) to be replaced with Gold Mine V2.
Layout[]
For a map that may have a number of tunnels, there was a concern for narrow spaces being controlled too much by Crossbows and being difficult to navigate like Space Station. JoJa15 explained that he would like the map to be more open to avoid that, and to avoid being tunnel heavy to make it confusing to navigate. Gold Mine follows through on this by keeping the map open to a central shaft with only a few tunnels. Players are not restricted to spawning in the tunnels, leading to difficulty in camping the tunnel entrances without leaving openings to be flanked. The area of the map is about the size of Skull Island, but closed off at the edges rather than stretching out into water (adding some artificial size to the map).
There are three layers in Gold Mine. The uppermost layer is made up of a ring that sits next to rocky outcrops. Attempting to go over the outcrops leads to instant death. Around the ring are piles of rocks that provide cover to players, particularly benefiting snipers.
Below that layer is the tunnel layer. A couple roofed overhangs can be found on the way to closed off lodgings and tunnel entrances, with a couple bridges stretching across the central area below. Ramps move the dug out paths up and down between the three tunnels. Two of these tunnels are within the spawn zones of each team. The South spawn's tunnel has both openings face North, while the North spawn's tunnel curves around to the East to have one opening facing South and one facing West. The third tunnel sits along the Western wall of the map and curves around to the North to have one South-facing opening and another facing the East.
At the bottom is the central layer. Outhouses and a few more lodgings can be seen, with crates, explosives, logs, and other tools and materials lay out across the ground. A few dead bushes can be seen. A downward slope in the middle follows a rail towards a collapsed tunnel.
Strategy[]
Gold Mine is relatively small. Weapons do not need considerable range to be effective in this map, allowing the AK Rifle to be a strong contender for a main weapon. Weapons of the SMG class may also find success. The outer layer and tower tops provide large vantage points to snipe from. Tunnel entrances provide good cover to focus attention up at any snipers.
Staying in the central area too long quickly leads to death. Venturing too close to the enemy spawn will result in fighting players still affected by spawn protection. Players can spawn up high, not just inside tunnels; being aware of surroundings is a must. Players should aim to make circular movements around the map, either doing loops or semi-circles. Getting up behind the tunnel entrances of the enemy spawn can help control the enemy's movements. Similarly, players on the allied team should be aware of enemies behind them in the upper ring.
While it is possible to climb the rocky outcrops at the borders of Gold Mine, doing so is not recommended. Players are left wide open to shots from many angles with no cover. Getting caught up in combat may distract players into moving the small distance back into the death zone, triggering a self-destruct.
From the outer reaches of the lower two layers, players may find many angles through beams, buildings, and other structures to catch players off guard and remain hidden from others. While the map may be quite open, these crates, buildings, and bridge beams all provide a lot of visual noise that can be distracting to players. This can allow a player to be naturally camouflaged if not moving too quickly. At the same time not moving enough can lead to getting caught, particularly by enemies seeking revenge.
Trivia[]
- A teaser of the map was shown June 8, 2024.
- A rail system with a moving cart was considered as a hazard that would kill the player upon contact with it. JoJa15 stated that it may be difficult to set that hazard up though due to the game's current limitations with its engine, and that if it were to be added that it would only travel in a straight line. This of course never made it into the map.
Gallery[]
Easter Eggs[]
The map has 10 Easter eggs, the majority of which seem to revolve around some form of battle with aliens. Advanced weaponry, skeletons, and the remains of a UFO are all that remain.
Alien War[]
- A crashed UFO can be found in the Western tunnel
- An alien energy gun can be found in the collapsed tunnel in the middle of the map
- An alien energy sword can be found in an outhouse
- The Alien and Area 15 emblems can be seen on the backside of a mine cart
Unreleased Weapons[]
These tease upcoming weapons in the game, similar to when Temple teased the Crossbow and the Revolver. It is unclear if these are the weapons that will be released next, or if it's just a general teaser of weapons to come.
- The MP7 can be seen in one of the two outhouses
- A Butterfly Knife can be seen stuck in a rail barrier outside the North spawn's tunnel
- A miniature Double Barrel Shotgun can be seen behind some rubble
- A Mace can be seen laying among rocks along the Northern ring
Other[]
- A crystal version of the Stealth skull referencing Indiana Jones is next to the UFO
- A literal Easter egg is on top of the South tower
